Dracula Effect
What it is
A term coined by Steve Yegge (see steve-yegge-pragmatic-engineer) describing how AI-augmented work drains engineers faster than traditional work, despite producing dramatically more output.
The mechanism: AI automates cognitively lightweight tasks (boilerplate, scaffolding, routine search, mechanical refactors). What remains is the hard part — ambiguous requirements, architectural decisions, debugging novel failures, judgment calls. Engineers working with AI are therefore doing hard cognitive work continuously, without the natural recovery periods that routine tasks previously provided.
Yegge estimates roughly 3 productive hours per day at peak capacity, but during those hours an engineer can produce 100x the prior output.
Why it matters
The Dracula Effect reframes the productivity story around AI coding. The headline claim is “100x output,” but the fine print is “at the cost of faster burnout.” Both can be true simultaneously.
It also has staffing implications: if AI-augmented engineers burn through cognitive capacity faster, the correct response may be more engineers working shorter intense sessions rather than fewer engineers working longer ones — the opposite of the “one person can do the work of ten” framing that dominates the discourse.

The Dracula Effect is a cognitive load mechanism, not a motivational one.
